В рамках недели специальности в учебных классах художественно-графического отделения КПИ (преподаватели Скопов Ю.М. и Хлопотов С.М.) был проведен открытый урок по изучению художественного направления «кубизм». Студенты 32 группы выполняли графический портрет по предварительно обдуманным эскизам, в которых они использовали характерные для кубизма художественные средства и приемы, открывающие им новые изобразительные возможности.

Русский философ Н.А.Бердяев назвал кубизм «самой полной и радикальной революцией со времен Ренессанса». Отвергая традиции фигуративной живописи и провозглашая создание самостоятельных живописных реалий, кубизм открыл путь многим художественным направлениям и эстетикам 20 века.  

В сложившейся к концу XIX — началу XX в. ситуации ни один из существующих видов художественного творчества (живопись, скульптура, поэзия и т.д.) не мог сохранить своего значения, оставаясь в рамках прежнего эволюционного процесса, начало которого восходит к эпохе Возрождения. Вопреки непрекращавшемуся сопротивлению широкой публики новое течение к 1912-1914 гг. распространяется на все области художественного творчества. Вначале Пикассо, затем А. Лоренс и Ж. Липшиц создают первые кубистские скульптуры; живописцы-кубисты пишут театральные декорации, иллюстрируют книги и журналы.

В музыке, начиная с Бартока, Равеля, Дебюсси, Прокофьева до Пуленка и Стравинского, также намечается тенденция к обновлению на основе фольклора. “Парад” Жана Кокто (1917) в исполнении дягилевского балета с музыкой Эрика Сати и декорациями Пикассо вошел в историю как триумф нового искусства.

Новые методы, разработанные французскими кубистами, привлекают внимание ведущих художников во всех странах. Не только интерес к “примитивному”, народному и традиционному искусству, но и “тоска по архитектурной композиции, утраченной конструктивности, вера в известную закономерность, почти математичность ритмических переживаний” были свойственны в это время молодым русским художникам.

Кубистский период занимает определенное место в творчестве большинства русских художников того времени (среди них Шагал, Архипенко, Лентулов, Альтман и др.). Однако центральной фигурой собственно русского кубизма является, безусловно, Казимир Малевич. Его творчество, его педагогическая деятельность и теоретические работы оказали значительное влияние на формирование отдельных художников и целого направления, к которому примыкали такие талантливые живописцы, как Н.Удальцова, О.Розанова, Л.Попова и др.
